If you’re wanting an in studio posed newborn photography session the ideal timeframe is within the first 10-16 days of birth. During these early weeks, babies are still very sleepy, curl easily into that classic newborn snuggle, and have that fresh, delicate look you’ll want to remember forever.

But, that does not mean you should wait until baby is born to reach out and book a photographer. A vast majority of newborn photographers (myself included) will book a specific number of due dates a month. Booking your due date guarantees a spot in the studio within that early time frame. It keeps you from having to frantically look for someone when you neck deep in postpartum and just trying to enjoy your newborn baby.

Below I am going to go over why that 10-16 days is ideal and when you should reach out to get your due date scheduled.

Why the First 10-16 Days Is the Sweet Spot

In those first two to three weeks, your baby is still adjusting to the world outside the womb, which means longer, deeper sleep and easy swaddling. Capturing your newborn during this time helps us create those timeless, cozy portraits—before growth spurts, baby acne, or increased alertness make it trickier to achieve that curled-up, peaceful look.

Book During Your Second Trimester for Peace of Mind

The best time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester, around 14–20 weeks of pregnancy. Booking early secures a spot on my calendar based on your due date, and you’ll officially book your session date once your baby arrives. This early planning gives you time to walk through wardrobe, heirloom products, and meaningful details, so when the big day comes, all you have to do is show up and soak it in.

Every Baby Has Their Own Timeline

Every newborn story is unique, so the answer to when to schedule newborn photos isn’t one-size-fits-all. Thats why we use due dates. But, what if baby comes early?

• Early arrivals or NICU stays? We’ll adjust your session based on your baby’s readiness. Communication is key in these situations.
• Twins or multiples? If your babies arrive early we’ll schedule based off their readiness / medical needs. If they arrive on time or do not require an extended nicu stay we will still aim to get them in around the 10-16 day mark.
• Baby already born? It’s never too late to ask. Babies are beautiful at every stage, and I’ll always do my best to fit you in or connect you with trusted colleagues if my schedule is full.

No matter what, reaching out as soon as possible lets us customize timing to fit your needs. We’ll discuss your thoughts and concerns and make sure were accommodating you, baby, and the rest of the family where needed.
